FAQs

Do we have a showroom in Horsham?

We have a warehouse and office that are open to the public with duplicate sample books of all the ranges we carry and some of the best coffee around. However, we recommend you make use of the mobile showroom and have James bring you the samples in person so that you can see them in your own home, with your furniture. This way you see the colour of the carpet in the light and the room in which you will live with it.

What carpets should I buy if I have pets?

Ideally, a loop pile is not advised as cats love to pick at the wool loops and dogs can catch their claws in them and destroy a carpet in one simple afternoon of the “zoomies”.

What carpet should I buy for each area?

Many manufacturers produce the same colour carpet in a variety of lengths and densities. This allows you to decide on a colour and then refine your choice depending on the location it will be fitted. So that wonderful uniform colour flow through you see in all the style magazines can be achieved without too much fuss.

Stairs and landing carpets need a hardwearing, practical solution to ensure it can withstand the rigors of daily life.

Bedrooms, for example, aren’t as busy so can be fitted with more luxurious carpets.

Wool is renowned as being super resilient to wear and tear, however polypropylene carpets are stain-resistant and often bleach cleanable too (Yes! It’s that easy to clean them). You just have to remember that wool carpets all need to be bought from the same batch to avoid any colour variation from the dye process.

How do I budget?

Carpets, like most products, vary in price. Remember that when setting your budget, you will need to include fitting, underlay, gripper and your ultimate choice might be limited by the type of subfloor you have. For example, an online price of £20/sqm (for example) is just the tip of the iceberg which is why we offer an “all in” fitted price that way there is less confusion about what is and what isn’t included.

How do I know that I am getting the best price?

We are members of The ACG (Associated Carpet Group) who negotiate rates with the big manufacturers on our behalf. This allows us to be competitive with the “big boys” and we are rarely beaten on price and never on service.

What about carpet samples?

Seeing a physical sample will give you a better idea of the colour, feel, look and type of carpet to be sure the price fits within the budget you have set. James’ experience will help immensely and he carries a wide range of colours and styles to ensure you have the best choice in your home.  If you still want a small sample posted out, once you have narrowed down your choice, then we can arrange that too.

How do I know I have measured the rooms correctly?

We would always recommend your room is professionally measured by us so that the right amount of carpet is ordered to minimize waste and save you money.

Why is my new wool carpet shedding?

A carpet that is thoroughly cleaned and cared for will last, on average, twice as long which is why it is crucial to maintain your carpet to maximise longevity.

Regular cleaning will help to keep your wool carpet looking great. Here are a few simple tips to care for your carpet:

  • Opting for doormats at the entrance to your home will help to trap grit and dirt, preventing it from entering the home and staining your carpet.
  • In the first few weeks of having your carpet fitted, vacuum as much as possible, ideally daily. This will ensure that loose fibres are removed, preventing them from working their way into the surface. Regularly vacuuming also not only helps to prevent unwanted dirt from working its way into the carpet fibres but also helps to keep the tufts of your carpet upright, maintaining the soft, brand-new look for longer. A new wool carpet can lose a surprising amount of fluff within the first year. This is absolutely normal and no cause for alarm.
  • We recommend opting for a vacuum cleaner that has brushes or a beater bar if you have a cut pile carpet. Or, for loop pile carpets, one without brushes is best, or raise the beater bar as any abrasive action could result in pilling.
  • Use small sharp scissors to remove unsightly pills or trim any piece of carpet fibre that stands out above the surface to the level of the other tufts. Do not pull it out, this can cause irreversible damage to your carpet.
  • We recommend immediate cleaning of any spillages.

Why do my Luxury Vinyl Tiles need to be dropped off a few days before the works begin?

L V T needs to acclimatize to the areas in which they are to be fitted. This avoids shrinkage, curling and lifting. A date when an early “drop off” can happen will be allocated at the time of booking.

How do I care for my new LVT?

Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring is hardwearing and is easy to clean/maintain. The enhanced surfaces help protect against everyday wear, spills and scuffs but are not scratch proof. The better the wear layer, the more resilient the product, some brands have a 10yr, 15yr or lifetime warranty.

Regular cleaning with a pH neutral cleaner such as those sold through the manufacturer will help keep your floor at its best. Follow these simple steps for cleaning your Luxury Vinyl Floor:

  1. With a soft sweeping brush or vacuum, remove any loose dirt or dust.
  2. Add 50ml of Chosen Cleaner to approximately 8-10 litres of clean water.
  3. Mop the Cleaner solution onto the floor, removing any excess liquid.
  4. Then allow your floor to dry fully before walking on it.

How do I care for my vinyl?

Keep your vinyl floor clear of spills. Promptly mop away any liquid that gets on the vinyl and wipe dry spills with a soft clean cloth.

Vinyl is hard wearing but you should still avoid sharp objects being in contact with your vinyl floor.

Clean your vinyl floor with a non-toxic cleaner or a no-rinse cleaning product.

Avoid placing mats with a rubber coated base on your vinyl floor. The rubber leaves marks on the vinyl that are hard to remove and can cause permanent damage.

Prevent exposure to direct sunlight. Excessive sunlight causes discoloration and undue expansion. Use drapes or blinds to keep the sunlight at a low level.

Abstain from walking with high heels on vinyl floors. High heels can indent the tile surface. Also avoid lighting matches and cigarettes near the floor to prevent scorch marks and burns.

Place plywood panels on the vinyl floor when you move furniture

How do I care for my new carpet?

While, unfortunately spills and accidents are inevitable and dirt and grit is a carpets worst enemy, proper prompt maintenance will extend the life of a carpet, helping it to look good for longer.

Door mats
The use of doormats will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil and wear and so extend its life. If you would like us to fit one, just ask James.

Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming will prevent dirt and grit from matting the fibres. An upright vacuum cleaner fitted with beater bar and/or brushes is recommended for cut pile (twist or velvet) carpets whilst a vacuum only model is best for loop pile carpets to prevent pilling and other forms of damage.

New carpet should always be vacuumed at time of fitting, when it is first laid, as there may be some fluffing or shedding when loose fibres work their way to the surface. This is perfectly normal and is nothing to worry about.

Keeping Stains at bay
Spillages should be dealt with as soon as possible – and preferably the moment they occur. The sooner a spill is tackled, the better the chance of avoiding a stain.

Liquids should be soaked with clean white absorbent cloth, white kitchen rolls or tissue.

Stains should be blotted and never rubbed.

Stains should be worked on from the outside to avoid them spreading.

Solids should be scraped off.

The carpet pile should be brushed up after cleaning to allow it to dry and not clump.

Carpet cleaning agent should be applied to a cloth and never directly to the spot.

Stains should always be rinsed thoroughly with water afterwards if spot cleaners have been used, but never wet excessively.

A hair dryer can be used to dry the spot.

For wool carpets the care treatments should be “Woolsafe” approved as they have been scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning wool rich carpets.

Ordinary detergents, washing up liquids, soaps or other cleaners should not be used on carpet.

Deep Cleaning
From time-to-time carpet may benefit from a deep clean to rejuvenate its appearance. This can be done by using a deep clean appliance which uses hot water and a special cleaning product to extract ground-in grime. We recommend leaving this to the professionals to avoid expensive accidental damage.

Some key points about carpet

Shedding: of short fibres from all cut-pile carpets made with spun yarn in the first months of use is perfectly normal. The quantity of fibre shed is only a minute proportion of the total amount of fibre in the carpet and its loss will not affect durability. Vacuuming of the carpet regularly from the time of its installation is recommended to the loose fibres.

Naturals & Berbers: with multi-level loop piles often have random blends of colours and textures, which may give a lined or striped effect. These can be prone to wear flat and need special care to retain their look and lifespan.

Sprouting: tufts should be carefully trimmed level with the carpet surface using sharp scissors. Tufts of loose pile carpets should be cut and never pulled.

Shading: is a feature of all textile materials with a pile and there is an apparent change in colour from the different light reflection from pile lying in different directions as a result of foot traffic and vacuuming cleaning. The appearance can be recovered by brushing the pile in a uniform direction and does not affect the wearing properties.

Tracking: is a form of shading in wear causing the pile to be more permanently deformed or flattened in areas subject to frequent foot traffic, such as between two doorways or in front of a favourite chair and does not affect the wearing properties.

Pile reversal: is a form of permanent shading which cannot be attributed to traffic patterns. Often more visible in cut, loop or needle punch carpets, the affected area is often random in shape and may take on the appearance of apparent water spill. Pile reversal is considered not to be the result of any defect in manufacture, and does not affect the wearing properties, although it can be unsightly. Some carpet manufacturers give a two-year warranty against it. It is usually irreversible.

Loss or change of colour (colour fastness): in carpets may be caused by a number of agents including shampoo, water, rubbing, sunlight, pets and atmospheric pollutants. There are accepted limits to the rate of colour change when measured according to International Standards.

Indentations: in a carpet surface subjected to heavy point loads, such as under furniture legs, are inevitable. Fibres with a high degree of resilience such as wool recover quite quickly, whereas the carpet that has been significantly deformed then such indentations are less likely to fully recover.
